BBC Sounds

Brief
BBC Sounds brings together the BBC's live and on-demand radio, music and podcasts into a single personalised experience.

Develop BBC Sounds current offering, and investigate how the target audience's habitual behaviours could influence, shape and develop BBC Sounds for 16-35 year olds.

Consider emerging, or existing but unexplored technologies and how these could influence your response.
How might we develop BBC Sounds current offering for 16-35 year olds?
Research
The first step of my research planning was to define my goals. What do I want to get out of doing user research?

I wanted to get an understanding of how our target audience interacts with audio content, understand their habits and find out what they value in their experience.

I decided to conduct both a survey and interviews to gather both quantitative and qualitative data.

You can view the results of the survey here.
Proposed solution
Redesign the core app and bring BBC sounds audio content into public spaces. Create engaging, physical interactions with users via NFC technology.
Concept: SoundPod
The BBC SoundPod is a device that can be placed in public spaces to provide location based BBC content using wireless technology.

SoundPods are pre-loaded with location specific content that can be transferred to mobile devices using a peer-to-peer wireless network.

Onboarding
A simple and fast onboarding process matches users with the right content for them, increasing their engagement with the app.
SoundPod Scanner
The SoundPod scanner allows users to download location based sounds without wifi or mobile data. Simply hold the device against the SoundPod to download the stored content.
Home
Radio, music and podcast content is split into three distinct categories to simplify content discovery.

Daily discovery allows users to further improve their personalised experience by listening to short audio previews. If the user likes the content, a simple left swipe bookmarks the content for later listening.

All categories are now available on the mobile app, previously only available on the web platform.
